MR2 SW20 Targa Seal Replacement

Sooner or later they are gone - i am talking about the roof sealings of the MR2 Targa model.

The seals harden out in time, deforming itself and then water can pass by when it's raining hard.

That's annoying - everyone who will meet this problem or already know that his seals has to be replaced, can find a little guide of what to expect.

The work requires no great knowledge of mechanics and can basically be done of anyone by himself.

First release from the roof and the existing seal at the screw points:

The panels on the A-and B-pillar, must be (partly) removed.

None of these panels has to be dismantled completely, it's enough to release the top screws. The panels can then be bent sufficiently to reveal the necessary screws.

To remove the B-pillar, the belt clip has to be removed, look at the pictures on how to use a simple screwdriver toopen the cover.

beyond is a bigger screw - open it and detach the belt.

That's what is behind the Cover under the B-Pillar

When all the screws are loosened, the seal can be removed - they stick a little but can be removed very clean.

You should now be frightened, because it is very likely that you will find some rust as it was for me:

Cleaning the rust with a steel brush

As a rule, you should now seal the metal - I was here a little unorthodox ...

I have everything properly sealed with appropriate sealant - i will see if it works after another 10 years :-)

I used much of them to stop water from running beyond the seal-rubber. that should stop rust in the future

install the new seal does not require much effort, only be sure that it fits the guide

Stick the Seal in, where it belongs. You can clearly imagine where the water should run out of the seal-channel into the window-channel.
